Our book of the week is... "No, David!" by David Shannon (author & illustrator) Although this is a previously, semi-featured book from the Father’s Day Melange children’s book collection, “No, David!” by David Shannon deserves its own highlighted “Book of the Week” spot. So, here’s to you, Mr. David Shannon for sharing your wonderfully brilliant, creative, relatable, hilariously understandable, fun children’s book. And here are a few of the many reasons we LOVE this book. Our book of the week is... “I Already Know I Love You” by Billy Crystal, illustrated by Elizabeth Sayles Today, we’re featuring the third of five books previously featured in our “Father’s Day Book Melange” in June (see here). Written by the famous, renowned, Emmy-award winning comedian and actor, Mr. Billy Crystal himself, in the book “I Already Know I Love You,” Mr. Crystal has outdone himself by providing just as much creativity to this written children’s book masterpiece. He has managed to entertain us all with yet another masterful perspective into the brilliancy that he possesses! There’s SO MUCH to say about this wonderful storybook… Our book of the week is... “Just the Two of Us” by Will Smith illustrated by Kadir Nelson “Just the Two of Us” is another book previously featured in our “Father’s Day Book Melange” in June (see here). It’s a beautifully poetic book written by famed lyricist and blockbuster movie maker Will Smith, and wonderfully illustrated by famous artist Kadir Nelson. It was featured as one of our Father’s Day favorites because it’s a cute story about a dad watching his son grow up before his eyes. There are several additional splendid aspects in and about this book that made it worthy of donning it’s personal Book of the Week spot, too. Our book of the week is... “I Love Big Cats” by Steve Parker illustrated by Ian Jackson We originally featured this beautifully illustrated, big cats “First Facts and Pictures” book in our “Father’s Day Book Melange” in June (see here) because it’s cats are the subject of this book, and the guys at ArtEase! seem to enjoy learning more about big cats, animals, bugs, and more. Because “I Love Big Cats” book remains a specialty item in our home school, it deserves to don its own children’s “Book of the Week” spot. I concur! Our book of the week is... "Puff the Magic Dragon" by Peter Yarrow and Lenny Lipton, illustrated by Eric Puybaret Sing with me if you remember the words to the classic poem/song…“Puff the Magic Dragon lived by the sea, And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.” Ahhhh…those words and tunes bring back memories… If you’ve not experienced Puff and all his magical wonder, then you’re in for a treat! Our book of the week is... "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle (author and illustrator) “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle is probably my most favorite children’s book of all time! I remember reading it every night as a child, over and over again, and I still have my original copy, with all the markings of my childhood ideas included. This story book holds a special place in my heart for many, many reasons. It is now a staple & favorite in our ArtEase! home school library for several reasons, too. "Amazing Grace" by Mary Hoffman (author), Caroline Binch (illustrator) If you’ve not yet been introduced to “Grace,” our fearless little friend, then allow us to extend your official introduction here and now. Grace is beautiful, intuitive, caring, energetic, enthusiastic, and thoroughly enjoys her own grand-range of imagination. She has an innate ability and desire to perform, entertain, all in the boundless depths of her mind (and her home). And Grace has “graced us” with her presence in many books, via several characters, in several plots, and by a few different illustrators, but all by one genius of one author, Mary Hoffman herself. “Amazing Grace” is a PHENOMENAL book, and for many reasons… Our book of the week is... "By a Blazing Blue Sea" by S. T. Garne (author), Lori Lohstoeter (illustrator) The very first two pages contain no words, and are painted with a big, beautiful, bright, colorful, happy parrot, flying over a gorgeous island beach. He’s also flying in the direction of the next page as an indication for the reader to head on over there to find out more. Then you’ll read, “Below sweeping green hills, On a crescent of land, Between craggy black rocks, Lies a white strip of land.” Instantly, I’m hooked! But there is SO MUCH MORE to love about this wonderful book! We’ll give you four (4) solid reasons we love this book! Our book of the week is... “My Lucky Day” by Keiko Kasza (author and illustrator) The sly ole fox is at home sharpening his claws in preparation for his dinner-hunt when a “delicious-looking piglet” shows up at his front door! “How often does dinner come knocking on the door?” The fox thought, “this must be my lucky day!” Or IS it? Our book of the week is... "Something Beautiful" by Sharon Dennis Wyeth (Author), Chris K. Soentpiet (Illustrator) Not every child's living conditions are as pristine as the image many of us hold as "the American Dream." Not every home has a beautiful landscape with animal-shaped bushes lining the driveway up the hill from the gated entrance to the arched car park. Some people's homes are not as...beautiful as we probably all dream of, as the little girl in this book describes. But, what if there's "something beautiful" YOU can do to make a difference? Our books of the week are... "Father's Day Five Favorite Books!" by various authors and illustrators Looking for a few great books that Dads will love and enjoy reading with the kids? We have collected a few of our favorites that our Dads love and read over and over again. Not all of them are about dads, but something about the characters reminds us of the many guys we know and love. Enjoy! :) Our book of the week is... "What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know" (The Core Knowledge Series) Edited by E. D. Hirsche, Jr. When we first realized and decided that we would homeschool our child, we dove in full-body into an ice-cold, seemingly bottomless pond... alone. We had only heard of the term “home school” or “homeschooling,” but weren’t quite sure what it meant or consisted of. We searched library books on “what homeschool is,” wikihow on “how to homeschool,” various magazine articles, websites, friends who were familiar with homeschooling, and anyone or anything we could find that would remotely make sense. I stumbled upon this book series and can NOT imagine the first 6 grades of our successful homeschool journey without it! Our book of the week is... "Llama Llama Red Pajama" by Anna Dewdney (author and illustrator) Anna Dewdney’s “Llama Llama” series is one of our absolute most favorite children’s book series EVER! Dewdney proved to be superbly talented in both writing, rhyming, and illustrating each and every one of the Llama Llama books. If you have not experienced Llama Llama, begin IMMEDIATELY and you’re guaranteed to be hooked. Here's why WE LOVE LLAMA LLAMA!!! Our book of the week is... “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!” by Mo Willems (author and illustrator) What a cute little character “Pigeon” is in this series. He’s a cute, clever buddy who’s been left in charge of the bus during the bus driver’s momentary break. Boy does Pigeon beg and plead with the readers, trying several times and several ways to coax children into granting his request. Our book of the week is... "If You Take a Mouse to School" by Laura Numeroff, illustrated by Felicia Bond What happens if you take a mouse to school with you? Well, if you take THIS mouse to school with you, then you’re off to quite the adventure. You just may end up getting involved in more than you anticipated, all because you decided to take your friend to “his” first day of school with you. “If You Take a Mouse to School” is a classic children’s book series that your children are bound to love. Here’s why we added this and a few others in the series to our home collection… Our book of the week is... "What a Family!" by Rachel Isadora (author and illustrator) WHAT A BOOK! WHAT WONDERFUL ILLUSTRATIONS! What a GREAT concept! You may be wondering what all the rave is about this book, so let us attempt to enlighten you for a spell. Our book of the week is... "The Gruffalo" by Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Axel Scheffler Words can NOT sufficiently or efficiently describe just how much or why we love this book! Words can not describe how many times we've read this book. It is the most cleverly written "children's book" ever. "Children's book" being in quotes because this is a book that the adults seem to enjoy more, and probably better comprehend the level of cleverness the main character exudes Our book of the week is... "Pigs Love Potatoes" by Anika Denise, illustrated by Christopher Denise This is the cutest, most charming counting book EVER! It's simple yet colorfully creative. It is poetically written with clever rhyme and rhythm. The characters are all so cute. The whole family is included and considered during the preparation of making dinner. And who doesn't love potatoes!? Our book of the week is... "Little Monkey Lost" by Keith DuQuette (Author and Illustrator) Talk about an adventure! This cute "little monkey" decides to "accidentally" venture off away from his comfortable, safe, home because he was bored. He meets quite a variety of other jungle members along his quest to find his way back home. He's so cute, so genuinely intuitive, yet so innocent. But... Our book of the week is... "I Saw an Ant on the Railroad Track" by Joshua Prince, illustrated by Macky Pamintaun We stumbled upon this wonderful book by accident years ago because we read a book entitled "Bedtime at the Swamp" written by Kristyn Crow and illustrated by Macky Pamintaun. That book was wonderfully written, and excellently illustrated. We decided to see if the artist had illustrated any other books, and here's where this week's selection comes into view. Our book of the week is... "My Brother Charlie" by Holly Robinson Peete and Ryan Elizabeth Peete illustrated by Shane Evans Our family fell in love with this book at first sight! It is a heartfelt, heartwarming story about a young boy with autism. The synopsis on Amazon.com is so well written that we opted to post their words here: |
