Our book of the week is... "Amazing Grace" by Mary Hoffman (author), Caroline Binch (illustrator) If you’ve not yet been introduced to “Grace,” our fearless little friend, then allow us to extend your official introduction here and now. Grace is beautiful, intuitive, caring, energetic, enthusiastic, and thoroughly enjoys her own grand-range of imagination. She has an innate ability and desire to perform, entertain, all in the boundless depths of her mind (and her home). And Grace has “graced us” with her presence in many books, via several characters, in several plots, and by a few different illustrators, but all by one genius of one author, Mary Hoffman herself. “Amazing Grace” is a PHENOMENAL book, and for many reasons… In this particular story about Grace, as so wonderfully stated from Publishers Weekly, “Grace was a girl who loved stories. Empowered by the strength of her imagination and the love of her mother and Nana, this dramatic, creative girl constantly adopts roles and identities: Joan of Arc, Anansi the Spider, Hiawatha, Mowgli, Aladdin. When her class plans a presentation of Peter Pan, "Grace knew who she wanted to be." However, not everyone shared the excitement of Grace getting the part she wanted, so she must use her imagination in other ways, with the help of her mother and Nana.
The reader becomes engulfed in this little girl’s vivid imagination and creativity and immediately root for things to go her way. We witness her figure out how to solve this situation at hand, and author Mary Hoffman does not disappoint. Neither does illustrator Caroline Binch who “contributes evocative, carefully detailed watercolor paintings, which add their own share of emotional power and personal passion.” Job well done by author and artist! Why do we love this book? Well, because of…everything, actually! The storyline, the characters, the illustrations, the plot, and everything in between. This, and other “Grace” installations all promise to take us on wonderful, unique yet relatable adventures, every single time. You’ll definitely want to add this and other “Grace” books to your collection (see here). We’ve included the image links to a few of our favorites below.
