"By a Blazing Blue Sea"

The very first two pages contain no words, and are painted with a big, beautiful, bright, colorful, happy parrot, flying over a gorgeous island beach. He’s also flying in the direction of the next page as an indication for the reader to head on over there to find out more. Then you’ll read, “Below sweeping green hills, On a crescent of land, Between craggy black rocks, Lies a white strip of land.” Instantly, I’m hooked! But there is SO MUCH MORE to love about this wonderful book! We’ll give you four (4) solid reasons we love this book!

First, the illustrations are absolutely, astonishingly AMAZING! Lori Lohstoeter illustrates the depth of her masterfully artistic range on each and every page of this book! Each and every spread is a painted masterpiece, each holding the ability to stand as individual works of art.

Second, the entire book is a poem! Simple, easy for kids to understand, perfect for them to read rhythmically, and straight to the point. The actual type is large enough for all ages to appreciate. And the story, its purpose, and its meaning are gentle, unique, and clear.

Third, the story that S. T. Garne chose to share is unique, friendly, relaxing, inviting, and even touching (at least to me) in many ways. It’s the story of an older guy who lives comfortably modest, “alone” on this beautiful island, for reasons of his own but that many readers can understand and relate to, and maybe even yearn for the opportunity to experience his life, if only for a moment.

Lastly, the marriage of the imagery with the illustrations is pure GENIUS! The author’s use of colorful words are precisely reiterated via the artist’s paintings. Together, they exercise their expertise by including several colorful, vivid words and images that comfortably repeat their purpose on every page. GENIUS!
