K-3rd Grade
"Native American Headbands!" During our FOURTH class together, in celebration of Thanksgiving, the Kindergarten through 3rd Grade Students ventured into making Native American Headbands! We first studied line patterns, line designs, and line art. Then we learned about my new favorite artist, Mr. Wayne Thiebaud, while viewing and critiquing two of his famous dessert paintings ("Lemon Meringue Pie" [1964] and "Cakes" [1963]). Then, students created unique line patterns on their headbands and added their chosen feather. It was FABULOUS! Thanks, class! Enjoy the various, uniquely creative line designs below. :) 4th-8th Grade
"Mile-High Cake!" During our FOURTH class together on Thursday, November 8th, we decided to take a breather from the intense study of learning all about the "Seven Basic Elements of Art." Instead, we focused on DESSERT! With Thanksgiving Holidays just around the corner, and in honor of my newest favorite artist, Wayne Thiebaud (and all his wonderfully, scrumptiously rendered dessert paintings and artwork), we touched on elements of perspective drawing while exploring soft/chalk pastels on charcoal paper. What a BLAST! Thank you for the inspiration, Mr. Thiebaud, and thank you students for helping us enjoy yet another terrific artistic learning experience! Bon appétit! Kindergarten - 3rd Grade
Our THIRD Class together on Thursday, October 11th was yet another session filled with excitement, energy, and education! Together, we discussed the importance of safety (especially during Trick or Treat season), horizontal & vertical lines, and things we enjoy about autumn, Halloween, and holidays. To test their "follow instructions" skills, we created step-by-step drawings of an owl (to take home and color), and finished the day with our own "Scarecrow Popsicle Stick Man" and funny googly eyes. Each piece is so uniquely original, engaging, and holiday-festive. The students also critiqued famous masterpieces, "The Scream" by Edvard Munch and "American Gothic" by Grant Wood. Great class, y'all! THANK YOU! :) 4th-8th Grade
"Symmetrically-SHAPED Selfies" Our THIRD class together on Thursday, October 11th, the 4th-8th grade students embarked on a challenging art assignment. They studied SHAPE (the third element of our Seven Basic Elements of Art) via a project called "Symmetrically-SHAPED Selfies." After a mirror-study and a few studies about symmetry, the objective of the lesson was to illustrate on canvas the other half of their self-portraits (the left half contained their pre-mounted self-photo from which to reference). This was not only an exciting adventure, but the students proved to be masters in detail observation, rendering shape structure, following design instructions, and willingly participating in activities that were new to some of them. I am utterly thankful for sharing this artist adventure with such an outstanding bunch of students!!! Kindergarten - 3rd Grade
Our SECOND Class together on Thursday, September 13th, proved to be another great art lesson with fun, hands-on activities that the kiddies enjoyed! They created their very own "Fall Leaf Suncatchers," using contact paper and tissue paper (seen below). They had a LOT of fun ripping, tearing, and adhering their own shapes and sizes of "warm color" tissue paper onto sticky, fun contact paper. We first studied the color wheel, focusing on warm and cool color families. We critiqued two more paintings by "the masters," and even created our own "scratch-off" designs on a fall leaf activity! It was loads of discussions of autumn, lots of hands-on activities, and a ton of fun! You can see just how creative and original our young artists are by viewing their beautiful warm color fall leaf suncatchers below. They'll be available to take home for hanging in a window after our first 2018 Semi-Annual Student Art Exhibit in December. "The Sun & The Moon" Our SECOND Class together on Thursday, September 13th, proved to be another exciting adventure with a great group of talented, young, artistic masters! The students were first introduced to the Seven Basic Elements of Art during our first month, with the first of LINE. This month, we studied the second element, COLOR. We studied the color wheel, various color wheel styles, color families on the color wheel, and warm and cool color families. After we critiqued four paintings by "the masters," the students created secondary colors firsthand using primary color play-doh! Then students created masterpiece #2 using warm and cool colors to create "The Sun & The Moon" drawings. FANTABULOUS! Each and every drawing is so beautifully wonderful and unique, it almost brings tears of joy to my soul! See for yourself, and be moved and inspired by our children! (All art is solely the beautiful expression of the artist him/herself. Artist's names will be revealed at the 2018 Semi-Annual Student Art Exhibit in December.) We shared a wonder FIRST Class experience together on Thursday, August 9th. It was TERRIFIC! The students were encouraged to become closer observers of facial expressions, lines and shapes in their faces. We critiqued artwork by "the masters," participated in a few warm-up exercises, and then created our own masterpieces, "Self-Portrait Mobiles." Presented below is each student's first creation! All art is solely the beautiful expression of each artist. ENJOY! (Artist's names will be revealed at the December Student Art Exhibit) Aren't they BEAUTIFUL?!!!
