Junteenth

Did you know that slaves in America had already been emancipated
two and a half years before President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863? The slaves in Galveston, TX didn’t know it either, as literacy of slaves was prohibited. They got word of their freedom on this day, June 19, 1865, two and a half years later. Juneteenth is often celebrated by way of festivals and feasts across the United States. Today’s a great day to celebrate Junteenth by learning more about its American history.
