Did you know that slaves in America had already been emancipated two and a half years before when President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863? The slaves in Galveston, TX just didn’t know it. They got word of their freedom on this day, June 19, 1865, two and a half years later.

Juneteenth is also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day. It is often celebrated by way of festivals and feasts across the United States. Today’s a great day to celebrate Junteenth by learning more about its American history.
