Our second on-hand, go-to, must-have item of the week...
The Teddy Bear!

What can you do with a simple teddy bear that’s been lying around begging for attention? We’re so glad you came to us for ideas! Stay tuned below for four (4) ways we incorporate stuffed animals into our homeschool studies.

The “teddy berry,” or furry friend forever, is our highlighted item of the week because we’re pretty sure that every household probably has at least one. There are many ways to enjoy your friend, and/or create a lesson or fun activity with him in the spotlight. He’ll “wuv” you for it. Here are ways we’ve used our teddy bears

  1. The subject of our ART activity, for all ages and artistic levels - he can be used to study and practice various elements of art, such as how to recognize and draw lines, contours, shapes, shadows, texture, even perspective. We’ve drawn and painted several of our friends over the years.

  2. SPELLING/VOCABULARY - if you’re customizing your spelling curriculum or use an official one, there are ways to incorporate words to learn to pronounce, spell, and define using just your teddy berry. Words like manufacture, embroidery, characterization, or tricky words like faux and excelsior, and many more can be added to your list of “words to learn.”

  3. WRITING - if you’re using WriteShop for your writing curriculum like we are, your students will learn to “describe an object;” teddy berry would make the perfect subject for learning to use descriptive words in writing strong sentences and paragraphs. (Click here for more fun Language Arts activities and games.)

  4. HISTORY - research and read about the history behind the “teddy bear,” and how it has evolved over time.  (Click here for exciting ways to give your history lessons a make-over.)

Teddy bears are not only our forever friends, but they can also easily be invited into our homeschool academics, too. They’re already home with you and used to being included in your memories anyway. Why not include them in your studies as well, creating a double layer of teddy bear memories. Enjoy! :)

IOW - Item of the Week

Each week, ArtEase! features an item, object, or product that you already have on-hand, or is accessibly affordable. We highlight assorted ways of utilizing otherwise simple or unassuming household or school-related items, and provide ways to incorporate each item into an art project or an academic lesson.
