FLORAL DESIGN DAY

The arrangements of “florals” or flowers is something we sometimes assume is easy and/or often take for granted. However, creating a beautifully engaging and wonderfully eye-pleasing floral design takes skill, knowledge, awareness, and creativity. It is the art of using plant materials and flowers to create such wonderful gifts and fragrant bouquets. Let’s give thanks to the floral designers today for all their work and expertise, and for helping our world continue to be a more beautiful space and place.

INTERNATIONAL POLAR BEAR DAY

Let’s take a moment today to shout “HELLO UP THERE” to all the beautiful, white, well camouflaged, largest living land carnivores… the polar bear! They live in the Arctic on ice-covered waters. They are almost exclusively carnivorous (meat eaters), relying mostly on ringed seals or bearded seals for food and survival. Adult male polar bears weigh more than 800 pounds and are over 8 feet long (from nose to tail), and their incredibly strong sense of smell enables them to sniff out “lunch” up to 20 miles away! Beneath their beautifully white fur coats (which allows them to blend in with the snow so much so that they can pass as snow drifts) lies jet black skin. Who knew! Now you do. :)

NATIONAL PERSONAL CHEF DAY

Dreaming of having a personal chef, a professional cook who prepares all of our meals (and other clients’) whether delivered with instructions for heating and serving, or prepared on site/home! How fantabulous this will be! Dreaming of a “private” chef, too, one to cook our every single meal every single day, fresh! Easy peasy lemon squeezy! :) Cheers today to all personal (and private) chefs across the land. Thank you for all the wonderfully fantastic, creatively beautiful, amazingly tasty meals you have/will prepared for us. Cheers!

THERMOS BOTTLE DAY

THERMOS BOTTLE DAY

Having a lunch box that included a personal thermos was once a hot commodity back in the day! Not only was my “E.T.” lunch box special because it perfectly fit a sandwich, a bag of chips, a few Hershey’s kisses, a Claussen kosher dill pickle wedge, it perfectly fit my “E.T.” THERMOS containing just the right serving and temperature of Hawaiian Punch, too! The fruit punch was STILL chilled at lunch time. Amazing! Something about the magic of a thermos – a container that actually keeps hot things hot OR cold things cold – is still amazing! Hot soup or ice cold tea will still be hot or cold hours later. Splendid! Enjoy the magic of a thermos today!

LET’S ALL EAT RIGHT DAY

National Let's All Eat Right Day is based around the nutritionist Adelle Davis and her work on nutrition, food additives, and her championing whole, unprocessed foods as the healthier way to eat. She was considered to be "the most famous nutritionist in the early to mid-20th century.” She believed that the best way to improve health is to improve dietary intake, and/or nutrition. Absolutely! “You are what you eat” has whole truths in the short quote. For today, are you a bag of potato chips, or a healthy bowl of steamed spinach? Thank you, Adelle Davis.

NATIONAL TORTILLA CHIP DAY

NATIONAL TORTILLA CHIP DAY

Talk about delicious! Yep, the tortilla chip and all its associated possibilities. This triangular (or round), yellow (or white) fried (or baked) corn chip is the perfect companion for a bowl of chunky salsa and white queso dip. Ooooh, getting hungry just thinking about it! :) FYI, the difference between nachos and tortilla chips is that tortilla chips serve as the base for creating nachos, which come with tortilla chips topped with meat, veggies, beans, and cheese. Can’t quite enjoy nachos without the wonderful, salty, crunchy, delicious bed of tortilla chips first! Dive in and enjoy tortilla chips today!

NATIONAL BANANA BREAD DAY

2/23/2021

FEBRUARY 23 (1 of 2)
NATIONAL BANANA BREAD DAY

Banana bread serves as a special "dessert" here, especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. It’s experienced best when made with tender, ripe, mashed bananas, topped with extra walnuts in a loaf pan, baked and served fresh from the oven, especially on a cold, snowy, wintry day. Ahhhhhh…… Banana bread is often served in coffee shops, in loaf slices, muffins, and/or pre-packaged in stores. Experience the tasty goodness of banana bread and celebrate this Dilly Day today!

NATIONAL TILE DAY

NATIONAL TILE DAY

Tiles are wonderfully splendid, super versatile inventions that we couldn’t imagine modern day life without. They are manufactured pieces of “hard-wearing” material like ceramic, metal, stone, and clay. They can be used to decorate or cover walls, floors, tables, and roofs. Artists, sculptors, carpenters and other creative minds that make our world go 'round have found ways to create all sorts of beautifulness using tiles (like the mosaic shown). We’ve even painted our own masterpiece on a giant tile square during home school activities. Enjoy this wonderful invention in a unique, appreciative way today!

NATIONAL COOK A SWEET POTATO DAY

NATIONAL COOK A SWEET POTATO DAY

The sweet potato is one of the hidden, golden, super-food jewels that we often seem to ignore. They are tasty, sweet, orange “tuberous roots” that aren’t actually potatoes and come from a different family of roots (morning glory). Sweet potatoes contain a higher content of fibre and less starch than regular potatoes, but also contain more sugar. How will you indulge in this tasty, healthy veggie today? Baked, topped with a dollop of sour cream and chives, or cinnamon and brown sugar? Sweet potato fries or breakfast cubes topped with a sprinkle of Himalayan pink salt and chives? Or sweet potato casserole or yams? However you choose to enjoy, cook a sweet potato today!

Ahhhh, can’t wait to bite down into a chewy, gooey, delicious, sticky bun ASAP! Although some often refer to cinnamon rolls as sticky buns, sticky buns are “more dense” than cinnamon rolls; but nowadays, they can both be topped with pecans. FEBRUARY 18
THUMB APPRECIATION DAY

Because the human thumb is “the short, thick first digit of the human hand, set lower and apart from the other four and opposable to them,” we can do all sorts of things that are impossible to thumbless beings. The thumb enables us to pick up small objects, firmly grasp objects, and eat with one hand. It’s little things granted to us freely that we often take for granted. So remember to show a little thumb appreciation today by giving “thumbs up” in appreciation or
approval. Thank the maker for thumbs!!!

But can you imagine getting a hippo as a gift?!?! Hippos are large, mostly herbivorous, semiaquatic mammals that are native to sub-Saharan Africa. Did you know that hippos can’t swim or float, but they stand or walk on surfaces below the water? Did you know that they are the third largest land mammal (after the elephant and white rhino)? Learn more about this interesting mammal today!

There is sooooo much to learn, discover, explore, research, did I say learn?! Although the ingenious invention of the internet has brought the whole world wide web to our fingertips, there is still something nostalgic, magical, and irreplaceable that can only be experienced live and in person at the library… the smell of the books, the feeling of the texture of the pages, the style and thickness of the binding, the display of the array of colors and sizes of the books, the designs and shapes of the long aisles of books and shelves, the unadulterated adventure of loading and unloading microfiche, the beautiful architecture of many library facilities, the variety of rooms and departments and their provisions, the cozy cubby holes in many neat nooks and crannies there…. PHENOMENAL! Today is reserved especially for Library Lovers. Engage and enjoy! (Check out our “10 FREE Educational Treasures You're Missing at Your Public Library” article.)

Ladies can choose to gather in groups or just the two of you over a wonderful brunch or dinner, at your favorite dessert spot, at home with a giant tub of popcorn and a movie, or at Starbucks while chatting and chillaxing over a frappuccino or warm green tea.
