"Just the Two of Us"

9/22/2018

Our book of the week is...

“Just the Two of Us”
by Will Smith
illustrated by Kadir Nelson

“Just the Two of Us” is another book previously featured in our “Father’s Day Book Melange” in June (see here). It’s a beautifully poetic book written by famed lyricist and blockbuster movie maker Will Smith, and wonderfully illustrated by famous artist Kadir Nelson. It was featured as one of our Father’s Day favorites because it’s a cute story about a dad watching his son grow up before his eyes. There are several additional splendid aspects in and about this book that made it worthy of donning it’s personal Book of the Week spot, too.

Here are several reasons we featured “Just the Two of Us” children’s book as one of our recommended favorites.
  • The title is that of a classic hit from back in the day, in which Will Smith uses portions of the lyrics in the rhythm of this story, such as “Just the two of us, we can make it if we try.... Just the two of us, you and I.”
  • The entire book is rhythmic and poetic, such as the lyrical style of Will Smith as the musician, artist, lyricist, and rapper
  • Illustrator Kadir Nelson’s colored pencil masterpieces are phenomenal!
  • The story is touching and relatable, as that of a caring, loving father experiencing the growth of his son from baby to adulthood, including all the worries and wonders that parents have along the journey from a parental perspective
  • The whole book is all-inclusive of relationship aspects that we can all, well, relate to!
Yes, it’s a keeper for us and a must-have staple to add to your library collection as well. You’ll enjoy reading each “lyric” along with the wonderful illustrations to compliment the story. You’ll want to hear it read in music-form. Maybe we can write in to Will Smith and see if he’ll provide storytime at our homeschool support group meeting some day, right!? RIGHT!

Get your copy today (see links below)! And be sure to leave comments about your favorite parts of this book in the comments section below.

Enjoy this and two more of our fun, creative, rhythmic storybooks, too! (below)
