"What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know"
(The Core Knowledge Series)
Edited by E. D. Hirsche, Jr.
When we first realized and decided that we would homeschool our child, we dove in full-body into an ice-cold, seemingly bottomless pond... alone. We had only heard of the term “home school” or “homeschooling,” but weren’t quite sure what it meant or consisted of. We searched library books on “what homeschool is,” wikihow on “how to homeschool,” various magazine articles, websites, friends who were familiar with homeschooling, and anyone or anything we could find that would remotely make sense. I stumbled upon this book series and can NOT imagine the first 6 grades of our successful homeschool journey without it!
Common Core, Flommon Schmore! Either way you look at or view the educational system of today, our children REQUIRE pertinent, productive, meaningful education and information. These books offer general, overall “things the students SHOULD know” from kindergarten to sixth grade. It offers overviews on all the basic grade school subjects and approximately where you (as parent/educator) can focus your lessons around or include over the course of the school year. Some savvy homeschool parents have simply used this series as a spine to build all their custom-made lesson plans and curriculum around.
I found this series to serve as my rubric to keep me along a decent path of about where my homeschooler COULD be depending on the subject. If you’re wanting a general yet very helpful and informative look at what information you could add in on certain subjects, or simple tidbits on things to get your students familiarized with (which they’ll study in depth in later years), I HIGHLY recommend this wonderful series, “What Your Kindergartener Needs to Know!” It includes all the basic information you probably hadn't visited in a while and forgot that you remember, and so much more. It's all compiled in a nice little (almost purse-size) book, just the right size to carry along on any trip. We've actually conducted several lessons around the information in this book because of the factual, non-fluff-wording text it includes.
If you’d like to get your hands on your own copy for repeated referencing, click on the links below to add them to your homeschool library collection. You will be SO relieved that you've found a wonderful compilation for all the basic subjects and information your 6th grader and younger needs!
