Our book of the week is...
"The Very Hungry Caterpillar"
by Eric Carle (author and illustrator)
“The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle is probably my most favorite children’s book of all time! I remember reading it every night as a child, over and over again, and I still have my original copy, with all the markings of my childhood ideas included. This story book holds a special place in my heart for many, many reasons. It is now a staple & favorite in our ArtEase! home school library for several reasons, too. Take a walk with us down memory lane as we share with you all the characteristics and elements that make this book one of our all-time faves!
Holding this book in my hand today takes me back to the days when I was a child, enjoying reading this very book repeatedly. I read it so many times, I had it memorized. I didn't realize I still remembered it until we purchased a "new-school" board book version for my son when he was a baby. As I read it to him for the first time, the words just rolled off my brain and off my tongue as if I'd just memorized it yesterday. This book is really special.
You see, there’s a very hungry caterpillar on the hunt for edibles to satisfy his colossal appetite. One of the great elements of this book is that it’s a clever, descriptive, scientific journey that helps explain to younger readers the life experience of a caterpillar. But, the way Mr. Carle chooses to illustrate each image on every page, and the way he chooses to pair the images with simple, straight-forward easy-to-read and understand text, and the unique way some pages are literally shorter than the next, with wonderful purpose, is all just so…WONDERFUL!
Originally written in 1969, this hungry caterpillar has been around for ages, and the story never gets old. It’s just long enough to pique the interest of readers of all ages, and it’s just visually inviting enough to keep us intrigued on every page. Every sentence incites excitement in us, making us anxious to get to the end to find out just what all the caterpillar eats, and whether or not he comes out alive! You’ll have to get, rent, buy, or borrow your own copy in order to experience this wonderfully classic, fun, and touching story completely! :)
What all DOES he actually eat? How does the food make him feel? What happens to the caterpillar in the end? These are questions you’ll enjoy arriving at the answers to when you read this wonderful book. Let us know how you enjoyed it in the comments below.
