 This week’s Item of the Week: Carpet Sample!
Have you had carpet replaced or been in the market for new carpet soon? Do you have several swatches of carpet sample patches laying around? Are they lots of fun to look at, hold, stroke fingertips through…just because they’re sitting there, in the way, needing to be tossed in the trash? Well, before you toss it, try adding this square fuzz into your home school for a change!  This week’s Item of the Week is the au natural TWIG!
Living in the city of Memphis, Tennessee for years has proven to be one of the most tree-filled, tree-covered, the color green galore experiences of city life in the United States I've ever had! Trees are literally everywhere. This makes access to twigs from trees readily available, affordable, and everlasting. Why wouldn't we sometimes bring twigs inside to make beautiful, lasting art? Yep! Here’s how we do it!  This week's Item of the Week (IOW) is none other than... FROOT LOOPS!
Earth Day is a worldwide annual event celebrated on April 22nd. A few years ago, we decided to honor this day by make rainbow art using only Froot Loops cereals, white paper, white school glue, cotton balls, and kid power.. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Here's how we created this beautiful masterpiece, or as we call it, "MasterTreat!" (see more on MasterTreats here).  This week's Item of the Week (IOW) is the infamous ice tray!
If you’re like us and have been holding on to one of the oldest refrigerators in creation… you know, the one with the freezer up top (with an out-of-order ice maker for years), that’s way off-white by now, and the two-handle top-bottom entry style, then you probably have or had several ice trays in rotation. You’ll also appreciate and maybe even get a kick out of all the many ways we’ve converted those old ice trays into highly efficient, skillfully productive activities for both educational and art activities. So before you finally give the old ice trays (or the old refrigerator, too) a swift kick to the recycle bin, try using a few of them for some ideas we’ve shared below. It’s as simple as an old-school brown paper lunch bag. It’s also something we’ve kept on-hand in my home since I was a kid. Measuring Tape (or Tape Measure) This item works wonders for younger children interested in gadgets. The idea of it being retractable is often fascinating to them, and then everything becomes an assignment, project, or activity. They definitely practice their MATH skills by measuring things around the house. But to pinpoint it more, I would send my children on scavenger hunts to find something "crimson" or "oblong" or "spherical" and watch them scatter with giddy excitement! They also enjoy having their height measured day after day with grave anticipation of being as tall as daddy soon. :) |
